Life Insurance
Life insurance can provide financial protection to your loved ones by paying a benefit after your passing.
People buy life insurance to help protect their family’s financial future. It may help replace income and cover debts or funeral expenses.
Your insurance needs depend on your personal circumstances, financial responsibilities, and long-term goals. A financial security advisor can help you explore suitable options.

Insurance can help provide financial protection for you and your loved ones in the event of an unexpected illness, disability, or death.
Critical Illness and Disability
It may be beneficial to purchase coverage while you are younger and healthy, as premiums are often lower and qualifying may be easier.
No. Disability insurance may replace a portion of your income if you cannot work, while critical illness insurance may provide a lump-sum benefit following the diagnosis of a covered illness, subject to policy terms.
If your claim is approved, the lump-sum benefit is paid directly to you. You may use it for medical expenses, lost income, mortgage payments, household bills, travel, or other financial needs during your recovery.
Covered illnesses vary by policy and provider. Many plans cover conditions such as cancer, stroke, heart attack, organ transplant, kidney failure, and multiple sclerosis, subject to policy definitions and requirements.
A serious illness can create financial stress from medical expenses, lost income, travel costs, and time away from work. This coverage may help protect your finances during recovery.
If a claim is approved and the policy requirements are met, the benefit is typically paid as a tax-free lump sum.
Canadian Dental Plan
Some insurers may offer health-only coverage. Before applying, confirm that the proposed plan does not include dental benefits or access to a health spending account that covers dental expenses, as these features may make you ineligible for the CDCP.
Private dental insurance generally cannot be used to supplement the CDCP. Access to privately purchased dental coverage—including supplementary or top-up coverage—generally makes a person ineligible for the CDCP.
The CDCP may coordinate with certain provincial, territorial or federal government social dental programs, but it does not coordinate with private dental insurance.

Generally, no. To qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), you cannot have access to private dental insurance or coverage. This includes coverage available through an employer, pension plan, family member, professional or student organization, or a privately purchased plan. It also includes dental top-up coverage and health spending accounts that cover dental expenses.
A limited exception may apply to certain retirees who opted out of pension dental coverage before December 11, 2023 and cannot re-enrol. Confirm your eligibility directly with the Government of Canada before purchasing coverage.
